The Springbok chair, designed and manufactured by Ernest Race, was a feature of the Festival of Britain in 1951. Race produced the design especially for the event that set out to showcase British design and manufacturing prowess in the post-war era.
Tubular Steel Industries (TSI) in Adelaide was making their own version of Race’s innovative design. The Jumbuk is almost identical aside from using a different material for the ball feet
I’m unsure if TSI had a licence to produce Race’s design? As with the Ernest Race Springbok chair the materials consist of stove enamelled metal rods with PVC covered seat springs and ball feet. All of the chairs have wear and some surface rust. They are not Springbok chairs and hence they are not selling for over 1k each ! however they are a fabulous design made locally here in Adelaide in the 50’s and are oh so comfortable !
